The RD 400

RD + TZ + RZ = World Record?

Suspension Modification of RD400 Our RD400 has gone through a lot of changes. We started with a TZ250 front end and it worked so well, we decided to use the TZ250 mono shock rear end as well. Our suspension modifications will give our RD incredible stability at 170+ mph.

Our engines have just finished their final dyno testing and we have successfully doubled our original horse power of 43 to over 86. We've also added RZ gears which will give us another 4-5 horsepower.

A special thanks to SpecII of Sylmar California for their expert 2 stroke knowledge, awesome engine modifications and world class dyno testing.

The 400 was actually the last mass production 2-stroke YAMAHA RD400, 1976-1979
Original OEM Facts:
398cc 2-stroke twin. 43hp, 365lb, 45mpg, 105mph

Following the successes already achieved by the RD350, Yamaha decided to re-work the machine and create the RD400. The 400 was actually the last mass production 2-stroke street bike available in America. As the death throes of Original RD400the two stroke were sounded, Yamaha nonetheless decided to produce the RD400. It was not a bored out 350... the stroke was increased. This required all new crankcases, with the Factory having to re-tool to produce it. The engine was rubber mounted, there were new wheels & brakes, and the engine was further forward in an attempt to quell the wheelies. Needless to say, the latter didn't work! Power in 1979 was 30bhp, with torque of 24.2. Wet weight was 355lb's.
